Hands-on Oatmeal Cookies

From my early teaching days, when I had a small primary-level class of special needs students.
Baking combined measurement activities, basic arithmetic, social skills like taking turns and sharing, and proper hand-washing skills.
The recipe for this big batch of oatmeal cookies is so basic, you can't go wrong. If you make these with children, you don't have to tell them to keep their fingers out of the batter. They're supposed to knead the dough, and they can knead it for as long as they like.
Have fun!

In a bowl, combine:
  • 3 cups brown sugar
  • 6 cups oatmeal
  • 3 cups flour
  • 3 cups nonhydrogenated margarine or butter
  • 1 tbsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
With your hands, knead all ingredients together.
Form small balls.
Space the cookie dough balls on a lightly greased baking sheet.
Squish down with the buttered bottom of a glass.
Bake in a preheated 340 degree F oven 10-12 minutes.

If you make very small cookies, they may take less time to bake.
