The next time I went to the grocery store, I bought a bunch of green onions.
Some stems went into salads, two bulbs with stems were planted in the pot.
The green onions grew and flourished and now I can clip fresh green onion to chop as needed.
There was more room in the pot, so I planted 4 paperwhite narcissus bulbs, watered them well and waited. They are now blooming and fragrant, bringing an early spring into a corner of my kitchen.
Garden writer Sona Day (www.soniaday.com) says you don't even need a pot of dirt to plant paperwhites. She advises planting the bulbs, pointed side up, in a shallow bowl of water containing a layer of pebbles or marbles, with the bottom of the bulbs just touching the water's surface.
Then add a splash of vodka to the water. A Cornell U. experiment proved that the addition of vodka encourages upright stems.
Top up the water as it evaporates.
My plants are thriving without vodka, but maybe I'll try a shot myself.
