In return for the use of the car to drive to school, my teenaged son does the grocery shopping on his way home. Just before we left on our spring vacation, he purchased the biggest box of Lipton green tea at Loblaws, figuring it saved money to buy in bulk. He took one sip of tea brewed from the first tea bag out of the freshly opened box--pronounced it ugh--fishy-tasting--and dumped it down the sink. So I brewed a second cup myself, from another bag--he was right. The tea had both a distinctly fishy taste and odour.
Three weeks later, when I returned from Europe, the box of tea was still sitting on the table by the front door, waiting to be returned. The customer service clerk at Loblaws said we were returning the item too late to get a refund, but they would exchange it for another box of Lipton's green tea.
Guess what--it's fishy, too. I'm wondering whether or not I should dump the tea bags in my backyard composter--or will it attract all the raccoons and cats in the neighborhood?
I googled "Green Tea Tastes Like Fish" and have found I'm not the only one who has had this experience. So, if you like green tea, whatever brand you try, pick the smallest box--just in case.
