Nan's Brown Sugar Thimble Cookies

Even if you don't sew, save your great-grandmother's silver thimble to make these cookies.
  • 1/2 cup butter or shortening
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • jelly
Sift the flour twice.
Cream butter and sugar in mixer, then add egg.
Gradually blend in flour and salt. Mix.
Add vanilla.
Roll into balls in the palm of your hands.
Dent the cookies with a clean thimble.
Bake 15 minutes on a greased pan.
Remove from oven and dent the cookies again with the thimble (they will be hot, so don't use your finger.) Fill the dents with jelly.
Put back in the oven and turn on the oven light--watch them; bake until lightly browned.
