Nan's Cookie-Cutter Shortbread

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup icing sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 cups pre-sifted bread flour
Leave butter on the counter until it's soft, at room temperature.
With a wooden spoon, stir in sugar, salt, nutmeg and egg yolk.
Add flour a little at a time.
Dough will be stiff to stir with the spoon.
Turn onto a floured board and knead lightly to draw in all the flour, just until the dough just begins to crack.
With a wooden rolling pin, roll out the dough to 1/4" thick.
Cut into shapes with a cookie cutter.
Place on an ungreased baking sheet.
Bake in preheated 350 degree F oven for 10 minutes.
