Some Things You Just Have to Do Yourself

Some things it's best  to do yourself:
  • Thoroughly inspect hotel rooms after packing to leave.  My teens left clothes in drawers and dresses in closets.  When your travelling partner says they've checked everywhere, double-check.
  • Inspect the rental car before and after returning it.  Look yourself for dings and scratches before signing for the keys when you pick up the car, and check it yourself for left-behind items before you turn it in. My autographed poster of Walter Koenig as the original Star Trek navigator Pavel Chekhov was left in a trunk in Houston.
  • Set your own alarm if it's important that you wake up on time.  And if it's really important, call your mother and ask her to phone you as well, just in case.
  • Be responsible for your own car maintenance.
  • Pay your own bills and balance your budget.  If your partner does this now, get involved.
  • Make a budget and stick to it. Don't pay on credit cards unless you already have the cash to pay off the balance each month. Don't touch your emergency fund. My mom managed on a very small budget, always kept 3 months of mortgage payments in the bank, paid in cash. She wore second-hand clothes and we didn't go to camp, take vacations except to visit relatives, or buy anything on time, and we were never hungry or homeless. We went to the library instead of the mall and we all got good grades.
  • Walk the dog.   The exercise and fresh air is good for you both.
  • Shop for healthy food.
  • Do a lights-off and doors-locked check before you go to sleep.
  • Don't be rushed out of cabs, buses, or away from restaurant tables.  Look and make sure you've left nothing on the floor, table or your seat.
