What to Consider When Buying Everyday Dishes

Color and pattern is not the only consideration when buying dishes:
  • Will they fit easily inside your dishwasher?  Very deep bowls, extra-large or thick plates, and thick-handled cutlery take up space and may fit awkwardly, annoying you every time you load the dishwasher.  I think every dishwasher manufacturer should market a set of plain, everyday dishes that loads perfectly into their machine.
  • Pick up a plate or bowl in one hand.  Is it heavy? You will carry these from cupboard to table to sink to dishwasher and back again for a long time... get a light dish you can handle easily.
  • Is it microwaveable and dishwasher safe?
  • What kind of kitchen floor do you have?  Glass and Corel dishes will shatter and shards will scatter far and wide when dropped on a granite or stone floor.
  • Do you really want big plates and bowls?  The bigger the plate, the more food you are likely to put on them over time to "fill them up"--and yourself.  Small plate, lose weight.
  • Will the color and pattern look okay with dishes you have already? Consider plain white or cream-colored dishes.
  • When I got married in the 80s, I registered for everyday Countryware by Wedgewood as my "good" china pattern (now discontinued, pictured.)  I can "dress up" this china with gold-accented pieces inherited from my great-grandmother and blue-and-white formal china inherited from my mother-in-law.  Mixing-in extra place settings of plain white china on the dinner table looks fine when we have extra guests.
